“Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who is the fairest of them all?”
If these famous words subconsciously warped our idea of mirrors into something only for the vain, then the newest trend in event décor will warp it right back into something delightful. As it turns out, the mirror itself is the fairest.
At first, the idea of mirrors as tabletops seem a very strange concept. Until you see the effect with your own eyes.
“The use of mirror table tops is very big in the US and is starting to flow over to South Africa,” says Maryke Minnaar, owner of Silver Star Event and Décor Hire. “Here it is still a new trend and only a handful of customers have embraced the theme. It is something you have to get your mind around first, but once you do, you will love it.”
She says that these table tops are used to great effect with crystal and glass as well as gold and rose gold.
“The reflection of everything placed on or near the table creates a lot of dimensions,” Maryke explains. “All the glasses, cutlery, vases and even lighting instantly doubles and creates a very decadent and abundant feeling. Your venue instantly looks bigger and the tables longer and wider. If done right, it looks very elegant.”
Complementary colours for mirror tabletops are clean and white paired with crystal or very strong, clean pops of colour in for instance the flowers paired with gold utensils.
“The feel of the venue and function will be very dramatic, but great care should be taken to plan the placement of every little thing as there are many elements to keep in mind. You don’t want your tables to confuse or blind your guests!”
